Grantmaking with an Equity Lens
Take the next step in making your grantmaking more equitable.
Philanthropy is most powerful when we center our most impacted communities. Yet, traditional grantmaking practices continue to leave these very communities behind.
Our Grantmaking with an Equity Lens (GEL) training creates space for your team to pause, reflect and examine your workflows alongside evolving philanthropic practices that lead to more inclusive and equitable outcomes.
We continuously refine our curriculum with the latest thinking and practical examples from the sector so your staff, board and trustees gain timely insights they can put to use right away.
In this three-hour hands-on workshop, you and your team will:
- Gain an understanding of racial equity and intersectional identities in the context of philanthropy.
- Identify ways to apply an equity lens to design programs and grantmaking strategies that are inclusive and accessible to Black, Indigenous and/or People of Color communities and under-resourced populations.
- Leave with skills and tools to apply an equity lens in your role and grantmaking practice.
We know that all organizations are at different points in their equity journey, which is why Philanthropy Northwest will work with you to customize this training to ensure your organization gets the most out of this time together.

Frequently Asked Questions
GEL is designed for mid- to senior-level foundation staff or trustees who are early in the process of applying equity into their grantmaking practices and program development. While you will examine your work as a team, GEL is designed to focus on a person's individual role and agency in the practice of equity in grantmaking.
Contact us for information on our rates. We have a standard price for a team of 10-30 staff, but we are available to talk through any special circumstances or considerations.
We offer both! We are happy to explore whether the virtual or in-person option is best for your organization.
- GEL is designed for organizations and teams who are interested in making their grantmaking practices more equitable. This helps us customize the training to fit your needs and ensure you get the most out of it.
- We do not offer GEL sessions open for individual registration. We can bring the training to a group of organizations or a conference if you are interested in collaborating to offer this training.
One thing that I think will stick with me after the training is how important it is to connect with colleagues to share what we're learning, mistakes we've made and what we're still trying to figure out, especially around the quest for great equity.
