Ending Homelessness: A Guide for Northwest Grantmakers

Grantmaking to End Homelessness

Philanthropy Northwest is a nonprofit association of grantmaking organizations in the Northwest states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.  As such, its members are interested in pursuing the most effective use of their charitable dollars in Northwest communities. Our member grantmakers are determined to approach their grantmaking with the goal of solving - rather than salving - the core issues they choose to address when allocating grants.

Homelessness was chosen as one among many issues area foundations, corporations, and other philanthropists attempt to address. At this very moment, many city, county and state governments, as well as low-income housing developers and service providers to individuals without homes, are addressing how to actually end homelessness - within the next ten years.

The primary focus of these pages is to provide information on how you, as a funder, can contribute to ending homelessness in the Northwest. In this report, we will provide concrete information on effective strategies to end homelessness, and how to decide which strategy is the best match for your organization’s goals. We will also provide invaluable resource information regarding how to put your funding dollars to work, and how other grantmakers have successfully worked to achieve the same goal.

A key conclusion in this report is that homelessness will not be ended by the efforts of one sector. The solution to this problem will involve the efforts of public, private and non-profit organizations.  Our hope is that large and small funders, rural and urban, will all find a comfortable place in the continuum of activities to end homelessness that will, when combined with their peers', truly move the needle in achieving a home for all.
