Muslim, Arab and South Asian (MASA) communities are on the rise in the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area, one of 12 metro areas seeing significant percentage growth across the country. Join us for lunch as we learn more about how philanthropy can better support MASA communities, and connect with other funders interested in learning more.

We will be joined by Sameen Piracha and and Shireen Zaman from the Proteus Fund's Security and Rights Collaborative. They will share findings from the SRC's landscape research study Reshaping the Country: The Growth of Muslim, Arab and South Asian (MASA) Communities in the United States. The report focuses on the 12 metro areas in the U.S. where Muslim, Arab and South Asian (MASA) populations have seen the largest percentage growth from 2000 to 2016; Seattle is among the regions where MASA communities have grown and are growing most quickly by 200%. The MASA population represents one of the fastest growing demographic groups in the country, but based on this study, these new growth regions lack the infrastructure to deepen MASA community civic engagement and are also home to active hate groups. This study begins to unpack the existing needs and potential opportunities in MASA communities to join, inform and influence the coalitions to combat the rise of hate and xenophobia. Focusing on key drivers and opportunities for investment, including overlap between refugees and the tech sector, and intersectional, racial-justice focused partnerships, we will explore how local foundations and philanthropy writ large can better support MASA organizations and populations in their own communities.

There will be a virtual component from 12-1 PM  PST for those unable to join in person.
