May Giving Days Raise $21M for Northwest Nonprofits

Nicole Neroulias Gupte | Preliminary results from this month's 24-hour giving days in Idaho, Montana and Washington report that donors gave more than $21.4 million to a range of nonprofits across our region. The current estimate falls below last year's May giving day totals — which raised about $25.4 million for nonprofits in Idaho, Montana and Washington, despite a national website crash that delayed and discouraged donors — but above the $19 million raised in 2015. Final numbers won't be available for a few more weeks, as organizers confirm payments, matching funds and other complex calculations. more »

‘No Child Sleeps Outside’ Campaign Raises $4.5M for King County Homeless Families

Greater Seattle's public, private and philanthropy sectors came together last month to support the annual No Child Sleeps Outside campaign to address the crisis of hundreds of families and children sleeping outside in King County, Washington. Including major gifts from The Starbucks Foundation, Schultz Family Foundation and Microsoft, more than 50 local businesses and organizations and thousands of online and Starbucks store donors raised $4.5 million for Mary's Place, the region's largest family emergency shelter provider. more »

Bank of America Campaign Raises $1.3M for STEM Scholarships

Bank of America and GeekWire announced that Geeks Give Back, its joint campaign that raises funds to support Washington students who are pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and healthcare fields, has raised $1.27 million, surpassing its fundraising goal of $1 million in corporate and individual donations. All donations up to $250,000 were matched 100 percent by both Rubens Family Foundation and the State of Washington. The campaign, now in its second year, ran from October 1 through December 7, 2016. All funds raised will be distributed by the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS), which supports promising low- and middle-income students pursuing STEM careers through college scholarships, professional development and valuable industry exploration opportunities. more »

Introducing Group Health Community Foundation

Cory Sbarbaro, Group Health Community Foundation | On behalf of our interim board of directors, it is my pleasure to introduce Philanthropy Northwest's network to Group Health Community Foundation. GHCF’s formation as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization is one component of the proposed acquisition of Group Health Cooperative by Kaiser Permanente. If the acquisition is approved by Washington state regulators and completed, Kaiser Permanente will provide approximately $1.8 billion to fund this new health foundation. We look forward to deepening our connections within the Philanthropy Northwest network in the coming years. more »

A consortium of five northwest state nonprofit associations has released a comprehensive study on the capacity, strengths, and challenges of the region’s nonprofit sector. The 2016 Northwest Nonprofit Capacity Report: Our Strengths — Our Challenges — Our Resilience, developed using survey data from more than 1,000 nonprofits in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington, highlights the progress nonprofits are making in creating a resilient sector. more »

Northwest Area Foundation Awards $1M in MT, OR, WA

The Minnesota-based Northwest Area Foundation approved 27 grants worth $5.3 million in the second quarter of 2016, focused on advancing good jobs and financial capability by funding grantees whose work creates enterprise development, access to capital, workforce opportunity, and financial inclusion for low-income communities, with a special focus on those that are Native, communities of color or immigrant. In the Northwest, these grants included more than $1 million for programs in Montana, Oregon and Washington. more »

Northwest Area Foundation, a Minnesota-based Philanthropy Northwest member with a grantmaking footprint that includes Montana, Oregon, Washington and 75 Native nations, awarded $13.4 million through 120 grants in 2015. The awards made in late 2015, announced this month, totaled nearly $5 million to 43 organizations in its region, including six organizations in Oregon and Washington. more »
