The Alaska Disaster Recovery Fund Update

Christina Fenner and Katie St. John, Guest Contributors, The Alaska Community Foundation | As most of our lives return to normal after the November 30th earthquake, it is important to recognize the difficulties that many families and organizations continue to face. The Alaska Disaster Recovery Fund, at The Alaska Community Foundation, was set up to support the ongoing recovery efforts, and enable donors to support both short-term emergency response and long-term recovery. The Fund is managed in collaboration with Wells Fargo Foundation, Rasmuson Foundation, United Way of Anchorage, American Red Cross of Alaska, Salvation Army – Alaska Division, Mat-Su Health Foundation, United Way of Mat-Su, Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority, The Foraker Group and Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska. The Alaska Disaster Recovery Fund has granted out $110,000 to 18 nonprofit organizations critical in supporting those in need with disaster recovery. more »

We Need to Talk About Democracy and Equity

Audrey Haberman, Interim CEO | Nationally and regionally, our communities are dealing with the grief, frustration and anger that results from the persistence of fear, injustice and inequity. We know these issues are complicated. We also know philanthropy has an important role to play in the creation of policies and solutions to address these challenges. Many of us have been having conversations with family, friends and colleagues about the community crises we face, but we are also hearing a strong desire from you for a place to talk more formally with others in our field. While the concepts of democracy and equity have always been part of our annual conference planning, we are now focused on creating and holding space for us to step forward together through those lenses, Under One Sky in Missoula, Montana this fall. As your learning network, we are more committed than ever to addressing the real experiences of people in our communities. Corporate Philanthropists Contribute to Orlando Fund

Individuals, foundations and corporate philanthropists from across the country have come forward to offer donations and messages of support to the victims, survivors and families of the Pulse nightclub attack in Orlando, Florida. The June 12 shooting claimed the lives of 49 people (not including the gunman) and left dozens more injured, predominantly LGBTQ and Latino. The OneOrlando fund now exceeds $8 million, including contributions from at least six Philanthropy Northwest corporate members: Alaska Airlines, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, KeyBank, Starbucks and Wells Fargo. more »

Wells Fargo Donates $300,000 to Orlando Fund

Wells Fargo & Company has announced a $300,000 donation to the OneOrlando fund, set up by the City of Orlando to address the needs of victims and the community in the wake of the Pulse nightclub shooting that killed 49 and wounded more than 50 people early Sunday morning. The OneOrlando Fund will be administered by the Central Florida Foundation, which will guide funds to nonprofits to support the victims and families of this tragedy, as well to the LGBTQ, Hispanic, faith, and other affected communities. Funds will also be directed to other needs that may arise but cannot yet be anticipated. more »

#OrlandoUnited: Responding to Tragedy

Audrey Haberman, Interim CEO | Our hearts are filled with sorrow as we grieve with the victims, survivors and families in Orlando, nearly all LGBTQ, Latino/a and young people. We are touched by the calls we've received from members and partners wanting to know how to help. We honor the many advocates, nonprofits and leaders who we know will help the families, and all of us, heal in the aftermath of such violence. Our colleagues at Florida Philanthropic Network have shared their recommendations for supporting victims, survivors and their families. In our own region, we are reminded of the shooting at Umpqua Community College last fall, and are grateful to Anne Kubisch of The Ford Family Foundation for sharing Roseburg's story of community resilience. Our six-state region represents America’s unique tapestry — urban and rural, young and old, indigenous and newly arrived, LGBTQ and straight. Sharing our different perspectives and experiences makes us stronger. When Tragedy Hits, Community Responds

Anne Kubisch, The Ford Family Foundation | Oct. 1, 2015, was a day that rocked our world and broke our hearts. The mass shooting at Umpqua Community College was so personal, so local, so much about us. The kind of tragedy that we somehow thought only could happen in other communities, or in other schools, actually happened to us — in Roseburg, Oregon, a town of 22,000 residents. We needed to cry, help the victims, and put in place a community response to the crisis — all at the same time. Oct. 1 was also the day we discovered the resilience and capacity of the Douglas County community. REI's Corporate Philanthropy Climbs to New Heights

Nicole Neroulias Gupte, Communications Manager | Seattle-based retailer REI made national news this fall by announcing it would remain closed on Black Friday — one of the biggest shopping days of the year — while paying the co-op's 12,000 employees and encouraging its 5.5 million members to spend quality time outdoors instead. The #OptOutside campaign drew more than a million followers on social media, especially in Northwest, and inspired several other retailers to follow suit. The campaign also confirmed what Philanthropy Northwest has observed this year: REI is taking a more visible and innovative approach in its community engagement and corporate giving. more »
