March 19, 2014

The Montana Community Foundation announced record giving and strong investment returns for 2013, accepting $3.8 million in charitable donations to strengthen and support Montana communities. Over $1.7 million was dedicated to permanent endowments, which will ensure support for benefiting purposes continues forever. Just over $2 million was donated for immediate use in Montana’s communities. Some of the programs that will benefit from this success include: the Big Sky Honor Flight effort which enables Montana veterans to visit the War Memorials in Washington, D.C.; college scholarships for students attending Montana universities; culture celebration events on the Blackfeet Reservation; performing arts in Bigfork; after-school programs for Whitehall-area children; funding for the Montana Teacher of the Year Program; and elderly nursing care at the Roundup Memorial Hospital.

The Foundation’s professionally-managed pooled $70 million endowment funds had strong investment returns as well. In 2013, the pool’s rate of net return was 19 percent. Nearly $2.8 million was paid from endowments in 2013 to support charitable causes all across Montana. Over the last 20 years, the portfolio has earned nearly $48 million in returns for the permanent endowments at Montana Community Foundation.
