Kiran Ahuja | February is often a time for hibernation and counting down the days to spring—unless you are an avid skier! Having grown up in Savannah, Georgia, I have limited experience with the snow and ice, let alone sports involving them. So, despite lots of inspiration from the Winter Olympics, from the huge gold-medal wins by U.S. Women’s Hockey and Cross-Country (skate sprint) to Jamaica’s first women’s bobsled team, the month of February was a time for our team at Philanthropy Northwest to plan, convene and reflect. Our efforts have yielded results, too! more »
Philanthropy Northwest is now known for our commitment to project stewardship and work as a fiscal sponsor for complex philanthropic collaborations, both emerging and mature. This commitment flows directly from our mission “to promote, facilitate and drive collaborative action by philanthropic organizations to strengthen communities.” Our ten-plus years in this business allows us to bring insight and expertise about the nuances of fiscal sponsorship across the full range of a project’s lifecycle. We support innovative projects by providing fiscal sponsorship of charitable programs, initiatives or donor circles, which seek to grow and/or test opportunities for growth while being supported by a sponsoring organization. Our approach to supporting fiscal sponsorships is to learn and understand your mission and build solid, trusting relationships. We can provide administrative services, human resources, accounting services, grantmaking support and communication support, depending on need. As fiscal sponsor, we bear legal responsibility for management of all project funds, and thus work closely with our project managers to ensure they have complete understanding of a project’s financial health.
Jan Jaffe and Mark Sedway, The Giving Practice | How do you feel about strategy? Most philanthropy practitioners we work with feel ambivalent at best. For most of us, signing up to do strategic planning is about as energizing as arranging to get your teeth cleaned. It has the oppressive quality of someone doing something to you rather than being in charge of your own health, especially when you bring evidence of poor self-care to the appointment. But it doesn’t have to be that way. In the same way that flossing and brushing your teeth will make that appointment less painful, we’ve seen how foundations that treat their strategy not as a discrete planning process but as ongoing practice, and use bite-size activities to make the experience manageable and fun, come out the other side with their strategy gleaming and in good health. more »

Kim Sogge, Momentum Fellow | I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest — and have no plans to leave anytime soon, either! And now I'm excited to be part of Pride Foundation, a community foundation I have supported for many years, through Philanthropy Northwest's Momentum Fellowship. I am immersed daily in the impactful, strategic investments that Pride Foundation makes in the LGBT community in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. I have been able to participate in our annual grantmaking review and discussions, attend plays as a part of our partnership with Intiman Theatre, and read stories that gave me goosebumps from our courageous community members across the region who simply want to live openly and safely in their home communities. I also attended Local Matters: Washington, Philanthropy Northwest's statewide convening, with my colleagues earlier this week in Bellingham. more »
We're excited to share with your our latest report, "Vision and Voice: The Role of Leadership and Dialogue in Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion." Produced in partnership with the D5 Coalition and the Seattle University Nonprofit Leadership Program, "Vision and Voice" is the product of a year-long process of research and dialogue with northwest foundation leaders about issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in philanthropy. It includes findings from interviews with 23 regional foundation leaders and an in-depth exploration of a unique peer cohort we facilitated, consisting of 10 leaders who met on an ongoing basis to discuss and support each other in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in their organizations. more »
Ankita Patel | Philanthropy Northwest is actively engaged in partnering with members and stakeholders across our region to ensure a robust and accurate count during the 2020 Census. Personally, I am incredibly excited about the launch of the Washington Census Equity Fund, and all the work that has gone into ensuring that communities can mobilize quickly and efficiently by our philanthropic partners. Now we are pleased to announce the opening of the request for proposals to apply for census funding in Washington state. more »
