Anne Yoon, Program Associate | Philanthropy Northwest's 2017 Annual Conference will be held along the banks of Cascadia's longest river, the ancestral home of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe and the Northwest's oldest apple tree: Vancouver, Washington! There's so much to learn and share during our conference plenaries and breakout sessions, but there's always time to take a stroll — Vancouver has 40 miles of urban trails! — and take in the sights, too. During our program team's recent site visit, we loved meeting with our partners from M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust and Community Foundation for Southwest Washington and making new connections while enjoying the vibrant streets, beautiful landscape and small-town charm. In adiditon to our conference, our new friends sat Visit Vancouver USA offer these 10 recommendations: more »

Sarah Mahlab, Canopy | As an organization focused on place, it seemed natural for Canopy to build a map for the benefit of regional communities. Over the past six months, we have collected data on regional stakeholders and capital flows to build an investment map for the Pacific Northwest. "The Map" is unique in that it allows users to overlay three distinct layers — stakeholders, capital flows and demographics — and adjust transparency on these layers to better understand how they relate to one another. more »
Sharon Nyree Williams, Executive Director, Central District Forum for Arts and Ideas | Central District Forum is continuing the legacy that was laid before us, with a mission to provide a platform for provocative arts and ideas that foster awareness of and involvement in Black experiences. I can only imagine how hard it was for the supporters back then to start CD Forum because sustaining the organization in 2018 is challenging work. The good news is that funders throughout the field increasingly agree that it is important to develop a funding practice and structure that includes diversity, equity, inclusion and access. more »

Garland Yates, Community Democracy Workshop | At Community Democracy Workshop, we work with residents to put them in more powerful positions to help change their communities. With institutional stakeholders, this community democracy approach might be unsettling, but we have to help them feel comfortable about walking into a process that potentially is confrontational. We must concentrate on making space around the table safe. Not false or phony, but safe. Residents and representatives from institutions will need to be honest and frank with each other and address real issues, but in a productive manner. We must use our influence and role to help create that kind of environment so that our communities can have the power and capacity to see the changes they want to see. more »

Janelle Choi, Momentum Fellow | How do you measure the growth of the human spirit and the empowerment of formerly isolated and frightened communities? What numbers can quantify this, when so much of the work is relational and transformational, rather than transactional? How do you flip the dynamic so that communities can set their own processes and agendas on the issues that matter most to them, rather than dictating those initiatives from the funding side? After years of working with brutally oppressed ethnic groups in Myanmar, I am learning a tremendous amount about grassroots organizing infrastructure as Marguerite Casey Foundation's program fellow through Philanthropy Northwest's Momentum Fellowship. Similar to what I experienced in southeast Asia, grassroots organizations in rural America are seriously underfunded, yet staffed by some of the most committed and courageous people I’ve met. more »

Robert Fleming, Clark Nuber PS | As Americans consider whether to vote for Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump for president, we've also put the Clinton Foundation and Trump Foundation under the microscope, peppering both organizations with accusations of self-dealing, conflicts of interests and questionable charitable purpose. These stories provide a great opportunity to reflect and refresh ourselves about the risks we should all be thinking about when managing a family foundation. Based on my 30 years of providing tax, financial statement and consulting services for over 100 foundations, primarily family foundations, here are the top five risk areas I encounter most often: more »
