Kevin Walker, Board Chair, Philanthropy Northwest; President and CEO, Northwest Area Foundation | I’m delighted to welcome Kiran Ahuja as the new CEO of Philanthropy Northwest. Kiran joins the organization at just the right time: summer. While many of us think of summer as a time for vacation and relaxation, it’s also a time for growth. It’s a time for learning, for reflection, and for building on progress we’ve already made throughout the year. At Philanthropy Northwest, we’re ready to turn our strategy framework into action. We’re well aware of the shifting landscape of philanthropy and the pivotal role that a learning network like Philanthropy Northwest can play in fostering positive change. We’ve been seeking a leader who could honor the legacy of the organization, and at the same time, think bigger about our future. We sought a leader who shared our values and who could be a bridge builder—across our different geographies and member types, as well as bring together new partners and collaborators. From Kiran’s breadth of experience and her natural inclination to think across silos, to seeing her in action the last two weeks, it’s clear she can fulfill these lofty aspirations. more »

The webinar will examine how community wealth building in rural areas and small towns is proving to be a powerful, place-based approach to leverage local benefit from existing assets in new and innovative ways. Presenters will cover a range of examples and tools, and explore the role of funders to catalyze economic development and impact investing in local communities. We will hear what they are learning and the challenges they are wresting with. There will be time afterwards for in depth questions and answers with our speakers.
Our mission: Philanthropy Northwest promotes, facilitates and drives collaborative action by philanthropic organizations to strengthen communities in our region.
This webinar will ground funders in the immediate concerns facing immigrant and refugee communities; provide early analyses of the policy and political landscape including the new Congress; and offer a preview of plans to protect due process and fundamental rights at the local, state, and federal level. Funders will have the opportunity to discuss what can be done now to support immigrants and refugees and the organizations that serve them.
Sherwood Trust and Blue Mountain Community Foundation are hosting a tour for private foundations and corporate funders to learn about and explore the Walla Walla Valley, from Dayton, Washington to Walla Walla to Milton-Freewater, Oregon. This program will introduce some of the exciting and innovative collaborations in our rural communities and highlight opportunities for future philanthropic investment.
On June 23, 2016, a deadlocked Supreme Court left in place a lower court decision halting the implementation of expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA). Join Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees and Philanthropy Northwest for a one-hour national webinar to learn the details of this decision and to discuss possible philanthropic responses to address both short- and long-term community needs.
