2023 Annual Report

2023 Annual Report

Reflecting on 2023, I'm filled with pride and gratitude for the incredible strides we've made together on our journey to create meaningful change in the sector. Our annual report highlights three themes that have resonated deeply with our team here at Philanthropy Northwest and guided our path forward: Advancing Equity, Catalyzing Change and Grounding Ourselves in Our Network.

Advancing equity is at the heart of our mission. Our selection as the EPA's Region 10 intermediary for the Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Grantmaking program, coupled with intensive equity training for our team, strengthened our resolve as we lived into operationalizing this vital work. For Philanthropy Northwest, equity isn't merely an ideal — it's an actionable commitment woven into every facet of what we do.

Catalyzing change through collective learning was essential to advancing this commitment, as we uplifted models of co-creation, redefined best practices and set new standards for the philanthropic sector. We launched "Can we talk about...?", a podcast exploring courageous leadership for racial equity, to spark dialogue and mobilize funders as agents of transformative change. Our seminal The Shift series invited grantmakers to explore reparative action, moving beyond rhetoric to reshape policies, processes and partnerships. While never easy, we embraced this courage-demanding work and conversations as a call to action for lasting change.

Grounding ourselves and reconnecting in person with our network continued to be incredibly energizing. I was inspired by the wisdom, work and insights graciously shared with us on our visits throughout the region. Hosting over 100 events, from dynamic calls on critical issues like data sovereignty and housing justice to leading our largest Foundations on the Hill delegation underscored the impact we can achieve by uniting our voices and efforts. More than 2,400 partners joined us throughout 2023 in strengthening relationships, deepening connections and reinforcing the power of our collaborative network.

As I look ahead, our new strategic direction at Philanthropy Northwest — shaped by invaluable feedback from our network — fills me with aspiration. We're committed to redistributing resources and power to underinvested communities across the Northwest and beyond. This roadmap will guide us as we champion, implement and evolve equity-centered philanthropic practices. Together, we are reimagining philanthropy in service of a vision of greater and equity and racial justice for all communities.

Thank you for being an essential part of this journey.

With deep appreciation,
Jill Nishi CEO, Philanthropy Northwest
