Philanthropy 101 is a four-part virtual series that helps all staff new to philanthropy better understand the sector. In this interactive course, you will discover the history of philanthropy, review a foundation's leadership and governance, learn an overview of grantmaking, debate the current big issues in philanthropy and explore the various roles within the sector. You'll also connect with a cohort of other philanthropy professionals from across the Northwest. Philanthropy 101 takes place over four interactive online sessions designed for accessibility across our six-state region!
Who Should Attend?
Anyone who has joined the philanthropic sector within the last one to two years or is interested in a refresher. This series is open to the entire range of disciplines within the field, e.g., assistant to the president, program officer, chief financial officer, controller, human services director, trustee, program assistant, among others.
Sessions
| September 19 | Speaking the Same Language Session one provides a broad overview of the philanthropic sector. We will talk about what motivates philanthropies to give, identify the different types of grantmakers and discuss the role of the nonprofit sector as a service provider and its relationship with both the private and public sectors. |
| September 26 | Fundamentals of Grantmaking Session two offers a look into the core cycle of how foundations make grants, as well as provides an overview of how foundations give, ways to manage relationships with grantees and discuss where implicit bias plays a role in grantmaking. |
| October 3 | The Power of Advocacy and Foundation Governance Session three is divided into two parts. First, we will look at the role of advocacy as one of philanthropy's central levers for change. Then we will transition into a conversation of foundation governance, the role of boards and how to avoid conflict of interest and self-dealing. |
| October 10 | Hot Topics in Philanthropy and Your New Community Session four will be an opportunity to hear robust discussions around emerging issues and debates, or "hot topics," in philanthropy. Then we will transition to a look at the philanthropic infrastructure, how to stay connected to professional peer networks and additional resources to further learning in the sector. |
Each session will run from 10 am - 1 pm PT and will be packed with information, group interaction, peer sharing - and even a little break! The four modules will build on each other, and participants are expected to commit to attending all four sessions. Group size will be limited to better support cohort learning.
