​All grantmakers and foundations are confronted with questions of risk. How risky is this investment? How can we be responsible stewards of our philanthropic dollars while embracing innovation? How can we be more risk tolerant as an organization? To answer these questions, we have to not only define risk, but also address myths around risk and understand that traditional notions of risk in grantmaking disadvantage smaller and BIPOC-led nonprofits. This session led by PEAK Grantmaking will break down the notion of risk in grantmaking from three perspectives: technology and data, the due diligence process and financial review. The PEAK team will share tools and practices to operationalize a more trust-based approach to risk assessment and decision making, generate buy-in from leadership for this process and overall reframe your relationship to risk in your grantmaking practice.
