Breakout Session: Building a Multiracial Democracy from the Ground Up

Rebuilding structures and systems at the local level to foster a truly multiracial democracy is both critical and inordinately challenging. Currently, few local governments in our region organize "charter review" or other formal public processes to engage residents in adopting new systems that promote equitable representation and accountability. The Citizens' Assembly model, which includes a large body chosen through a randomized process, has been effectively utilized in a growing number of countries to tackle thorny questions of democracy and systems change. Join this conversation to learn about how this deliberative process can help communities in the Pacific Northwest build a stronger, multiracial democracy.
