Job Summary:

 

United Way of King County’s Free Tax Preparation Campaign is committed to helping low- to moderate-income families connect with life changing anti-poverty programs. The campaign served more than thirteen thousand clients and their family members during the 2022-23 tax season, bringing more than $13 million into the community. United Way plans to exceed these accomplishments during the upcoming 2023-24 tax season and is hiring up to 25 Tax Site Managers to achieve this goal. 

 

As a Tax Site Manager for the Free Tax Preparation Campaign, you will provide coordination, organization, and supervision for tax preparation, including overseeing team assignments, providing guidance and mentorship during designated shifts, answering tax law questions, supporting volunteers, troubleshooting issues and elevating challenges. We are seeking individuals with strong customer service experience with low-income clients, high degrees of flexibility and adaptability, the ability to ensure quality in the tax returns filed, and the capability to manage the volunteers in dynamic environments. 

 

This position is a temporary, time-limited role. Selected candidates will be required to attend a Tax Site Manager training session and support at least two of the five volunteer training courses offered on weekends. Tax site management will occur from January 08 – April 21, 2024, with the possibility to extend based on availability and performance. Tax Site Managers will oversee one or more of the 20 seasonal tax sites located throughout King County. Most Tax Site Managers will work part-time schedules that may consist of daytime, evening, and weekend hours, depending on preference and availability.

Compensation:

 

The compensation for this role is $26.36 per hour. This positing will remain open until all the positions are filled.

 

In compliance with the City of Seattle’s Paid Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance, you will accrue Sick and Safe Leave for the period of your assignment. After 90 days of employment, these accrued hours can be used for Sick and Safe Leave. You will not be compensated for these accrued hours when your assignment ends. 

 

Essential Duties:

 

  • Oversees preparation of tax returns and confirms all returns are correct.  
  • Drives team motivation to positively impact weekly goals.
  • Provides exceptional support to volunteers, managing and answering questions.
  • Provides excellent customer service by resolving issues and making sure clients receive all the services for which they are eligible.
  • Transmits tax returns to IRS Service Center and follows up on all rejected returns.
  • Participates in tax preparation and quality review training sessions.
  • Troubleshoots issues such as case management ticketing problems for clients and volunteers, and escalates unresolved issues as needed to reach an appropriate resolution. 
  • Submits weekly reports and communicates regularly with Tax Campaign staff during tax season.
  • Assists with training and certification of volunteers.

 

Candidate Qualifications: 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

  • Demonstrated understanding of social justice and racial equity and committed to applying racial and economic justice lenses in both personal and workplace context.
  • Lived experience or demonstrated professional skills working with a diverse work environment.
  • Demonstrated strong proficiency with technology including coaching others to use technology effectively and troubleshooting technical problems.
  • Proven exceptional customer service skills serving diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated team management experience, especially if experienced managing volunteers.
  • Proven strong interpersonal, relationship-building and leadership skills; has a results-oriented approach with a winning attitude.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate a team to achieve weekly goals; ability to stay calm during high-stress times, and able to work well in a fast-paced remote work environment.
  • Proven high degree of flexibility and adaptability.
  • Proven strong communication skills in-person, by email, and via virtual messaging platforms like MS Teams
  • Demonstrated willingness to understand and learn various service delivery models.
  • Proven understanding of barriers that low-income communities face.
  • Proven ability to use tax preparation software or willingness to learn new software systems.
  • The ability to speak a second language is helpful. Priority languages include Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Tagalog and Amharic.
  • Demonstrated experience with handling individual tax returns. Prior experience in tax law is helpful.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality with highly sensitive client information.
  • Willingness to receive tax training and be VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) certified at the advanced level.

 

Education and/or Experience:

 

High school degree required. Experience in free tax preparation support is helpful (training will be provided). Having a strong understanding of tax law is a plus. Experience in customer service and team management required.
