About this event
Join us for this Conversations in Philanthropy event to learn about an alternative funding model that centers community voices and redistributes decision-making power in grantmaking. During this session, an organization that used a participatory funding model that gave seven community of color organizations decision-making authority on funding will share the lessons they learned throughout the process. Participants will be able to engage in conversation with our panel of community leaders who have created a coalition through participatory funding.
Background
In fall 2019, United Way of King County (UWKC) co-created a participatory grantmaking process with seven executive directors from grassroots and community of color-based organizations. The intention behind this approach was to begin to transform power dynamics inherent within traditional philanthropic models — moving from “power over” to “power with” by shifting decision-making authority to community leaders of color.
