Cambia Health Foundation is giving a $4 million grant to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation in support of the Knight Cancer Challenge.
Cambia’s million grant, part of an over-the-top multi-organizational effort in support of the Knight Cancer Challenge, will be used to create “The Cambia Health Foundation Endowed Chair in Pediatric Palliative Care” and “The Cambia Health Foundation Innovation Fund in Pediatric Palliative Care.” The grant, awarded through Cambia Health Foundation’s Sojourns Program, will help improve the quality of life for young patients who need palliative care – a holistic approach for individuals and families living with serious illnesses – through research and education.
“Cambia Health Foundation is incredibly honored to help the OHSU Knight Cancer Challenge cross the finish line of their historic fundraising effort,” said Peggy Maguire, president and board chair of the Cambia Health Foundation. “By supporting innovative organizations like OHSU and the nationally recognized pediatric palliative care work of Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, we’re improving the quality of life for pediatric cancer patients and their families.
Cambia Health Foundation is the corporate foundation of Cambia Health Solutions, a Portland-based total health solutions company dedicated to transforming the way people experience health care. The foundation has supported the advancement of palliative care since 2009, when it awarded its first grant to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation to support the hospital’s ground-breaking Bridges pediatric palliative care program. Cambia and its employees also donated an additional $1 million to the Knight Cancer Challenge in May of 2015.
Over the past 10 years, Cambia Health Foundation has become a national leader in advancing palliative care education and promoting conversations about health care decision-making in support of individuals and families facing serious illness. Last year, health plans in the Cambia Health Solutions family of companies introduced one of the industry’s most comprehensive approaches to palliative care, including new health benefits for its members and employees. With this latest grant, Cambia Health Foundation funding for regional and local palliative care programs totals nearly $25 million.
