In the second edition of this monograph, Daniel Kemmis explores the sometimes-fraught relationship between philanthropy and democracy. Beginning with a wide-ranging stroll through the shared history of philanthropy and democracy, Kemmis asks whether philanthropy can and should do more to strengthen the infrastructure and practices of democracy.
by Daniel Kemmis, Philanthropy Northwest board member and Kettering Foundation fellow. Almost all philanthropists are contributing to democracy almost all the time, even though most of them don’t think of their daily work in those terms. This unintentional philanthropic contribution to democracy is truly immeasurable. How does this abundance of philanthropic contributions to democracy counterbalance the weakness in so many of our governing institutions? We had a lively session on this topic in May at the joint Philanthropy Northwest – GRANTMAKERS of Oregon and Southwest Washington conference in Oregon. Last week, leaders from our nation's 34 regional philanthropy networks gathered in San Diego for the annual conference of the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers. Philanthropy Northwest was there in force, with a contingent of eight people representing all of the facets of our organization. Given the sprawling, diverse nature of the conference, which included everything from sessions on executive transition to branding, public policy and a deep dive on technology, and the bench depth of our team, we're bringing you a recap built from our team's reflections upon their "aha" moments from the conference. more »
When I’m not consulting for philanthropists, I play in a punk band. Much to my surprise – or perhaps not surprisingly at all -- I’ve realized that the lessons I’ve learned about collaboration from my bandmates are at least as valuable as any I’ve learned from my friends in philanthropy. Here are the most important lessons they’ve taught me. more »
Ann Saxton, Vice President | Last week I had the pleasure of attending Foundations on the Hill (FOTH) in Washington, D.C. with a number of our Philanthropy Northwest partners and almost 200 others in the philanthropy community from across the nation. Over three days we met with government agency officials and more than 20 members of Congress from across our six-state region to share the vital role our sector plays in supporting healthy and vibrant communities. For some, this was a first opportunity to meet and begin forming lasting relationships with elected officials and for others it was a chance to reconnect and show ongoing commitment to the mission, issues and communities we serve. more »
