Trends 2016 Frequently Asked Questions

Trends 2016 Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Trends 2016 data gathering process different from previous years?

This year we are encouraging our members and past Trends reporters to submit their data directly to Foundation Center, instead of to Philanthropy Northwest. Submitting your data to Foundation Center allows for participation in Get on the Map and Trends 2016 simultaneously. It also ensures that Philanthropy Northwest receives the most comprehensive and accurate data at the lowest overall cost. We are no longer accepting grant data from members and past reporters for free due to cost of coding data. We will invest the cost savings in building out new elements of our report that reflect the changing nature of the field and tell a more comprehensive story of philanthropy's impact beyond the grant.

Can I submit my data to Foundation Center if I am not a Philanthropy Northwest member? Will it be included in Trends 2016?

Data submitted to Foundation Center will be included in Trends 2016 regardless of membership status. Data submitted to Foundation Center will not be included in Philanthropy Northwest's customized, online map unless you are a member.

Can I submit grant data directly to Philanthropy Northwest and not to Foundation Center?

Yes. You can submit FY 2014 grant data to trends@philanthropynw.org. We will clean and code the data according to Foundation Center taxonomy. We will contact you directly to review your data and costs after you submit your data. Fees for grant coding are:

  • 250 or fewer grants: $500
  • More than 250 grants: $745
How much does it cost to submit my data directly to Foundation Center?

It's free.

Will you be including 990 and 990-PF data from members who do not submit their data to Foundation Center or Philanthropy Northwest?

No. We have found that information gathered from 990 and 990-PFs is often not comprehensive enough to ensure accurate and comprehensive reporting.

How will my grants data be used?

All grants data will cleaned, enhanced and included as part of Foundation Center's Foundation Maps data set. Philanthropy Northwest will analyze this data to prepareTrends in Northwest Philanthropy 2016 , which will be published in early 2016. In addition, Philanthropy Northwest members will be able to access an interactive map of member giving data to see who is giving what, where and when.
