Cory Sbarbaro, Group Health Community Foundation | We are pleased to introduce our new board of directors: a group of 16 individuals, reflective of the diverse perspectives and voices across Washington, who are committed to carrying on Group Health’s legacy of caring, innovation, excellence and equity. The board of directors has the incredible opportunity to engage communities across the state and determine the priorities and strategies that will shape the work of the foundation for years to come. This work begins in earnest later this month — when the board will gather for the first time to learn about each other, develop a shared understanding of the Group Health legacy, and explore the values and principles that will form the underpinnings of the board’s governance. more »

Introducing Group Health Community Foundation

Cory Sbarbaro, Group Health Community Foundation | On behalf of our interim board of directors, it is my pleasure to introduce Philanthropy Northwest's network to Group Health Community Foundation. GHCF’s formation as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization is one component of the proposed acquisition of Group Health Cooperative by Kaiser Permanente. If the acquisition is approved by Washington state regulators and completed, Kaiser Permanente will provide approximately $1.8 billion to fund this new health foundation. We look forward to deepening our connections within the Philanthropy Northwest network in the coming years. more »

Mat-Su Health Foundation Awards $1.7M to Alaska Nonprofits

Seven Alaska organizations have been selected to receive Mat-Su Health Foundation funds totaling more than $1.7 million. Co-Occurring Disorders Institute Inc. (CODI), Ptarmigan Pediatrics and Set Free Alaska were awarded through the foundation's Discovery grant program. Blood and Fire Ministry of Alaska, CCS Early Learning, Heartreach Pregnancy Center, and Valley Charities were selected for Healthy Impact grants. more »

Ballmers, Microsoft Commit $21M to Washington State Opportunity Scholarship

Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and his wife Connie, joined by Microsoft, have committed $21 million to the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship to support low- and middle-income students pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and health care fields. The scholarship, which Boeing and Microsoft each helped found with $25 million each in 2011, matches public and private money to deserving scholars and encourages recipients to work in Washington state once they complete their degrees. more »
