Philanthropy Northwest would like to recognize and celebrate the work of our former board member Elizabeth Ripley as she retires from her role as president and CEO of Mat-Su Health Foundation. Elizabeth served on our board from 2013 to 2021 and has been a constant reminder of the true definition of philanthropy.

“Philanthropy is love of humanity. To love a person or people requires us to see them, acknowledge them and help them live more fully,” says Elizabeth. “A career in human services is deeply rewarding and meaningful because people are at the center.  I’m so grateful to all the people I’ve crossed paths with, learned from and worked with to enable people and communities to thrive.”

During her time as a board member for Philanthropy Northwest, Elizabeth embraced community and inspired her fellow board members to meet people where they are. With her leadership and thoughtfulness, Elizabeth influenced our organization to take risks if the risk meant connection.

Lyn Hunter, our director of strategic initiatives and board relations, speaks on the personal contributions she has seen Elizabeth make while on the board.

“Elizabeth made an indelible mark on our organization, especially during her time as a board member from 2013 to 2021. I first got to know her when she chaired our unforgettable 2013 conference in Juneau, Alaska. Leading a committee of 19, they orchestrated one of our most memorable events, the legendary Juneau Dinners,” says Lyn. “Attendees were invited into local homes for small group meals — a bold, innovative idea that worked beautifully, thanks to the warm hospitality of Juneau families who shared delicious locally harvested seafood and lively conversation. It was a risky approach, but Elizabeth’s vision made it a tremendous success. Her legacy will be felt for years to come.”
“Her example has shaped how I approach my own leadership. Her legacy continues to inspire me.” — Lilliane Ballesteros

Board member Lilliane Ballesteros notes, “Watching Elizabeth lead as Nominations and Governance Chair was a masterclass in leadership. I learned so much by observing how she navigated the role — building consensus, working with fellow board members and guiding the committee with confidence and grace. Her example has shaped how I approach my own leadership. Her legacy continues to inspire me.”

Jill Nishi, CEO at Philanthropy Northwest, comments on her time with Elizabeth as a fellow board member. “Prior to stepping into my CEO role, Elizabeth and I were colleagues on the Philanthropy Northwest board. I always appreciated her sharp thinking and willingness to ask smart questions. She was an amazing leader for our organization and the sector more broadly.”

From all of us at Philanthropy Northwest, we thank Elizabeth for her years of service and the creativity she brought to the board. We wish her the best in all her future endeavors.
