Philanthropy Northwest is happy to spotlight the work and impact of our board member Michael Halligan as he retires after serving for 22 years as Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation’s executive director. Mike is a Vietnam War veteran, a former senator and a true believer in the work of public service. He has served on our board since 2009 guided by the origins of his passion for philanthropy.
“I’m born and raised in Billings, Montana, and I went to a high school where besides one African American woman, everyone was white,” says Mike. “But when I joined the Army, I was an Infantry Platoon leader and sitting with my platoon – that was primarily African American – during the monsoon season, I’d just listen. And it was my first time hearing directly about the unique disparities and challenges these men faced. That was a turning point for me.”
In his personal and professional life, Mike has always advocated for “the little guy.” He wants to hear the voices that are not often heard and believes everyone has a place at the table, a sentiment he maintained on the Philanthropy Northwest board as one of our longest-acting members.
Philanthropy Northwest’s Meredith Higashi, Philanthropy Northwest’s Chief of Staff and VP of Government Engagement notes:
“Mike is an amazing champion and advocate for all Montanans and the most underserved communities among us,” says Jill Nishi, Philanthropy Northwest’s CEO. “At Philanthropy Northwest, we were grateful to have his values-driven leadership on our board – he guided us over many years with both intellect and humility, and always with a sharp wit and terrific sense of humor! Mike will be missed but his imprint and influence on our sector will remain.”
From all of us at Philanthropy Northwest, thank you for acting as an example of leadership in service.
