About this event
Sanctuary policies have garnered heightened media attention since the president signed an executive order on January 25 to withhold federal funding from cities that adopt such policies. What are sanctuary policies? What are the implications of the executive order? Why do many law enforcement leaders disagree with the administration's effort to withhold federal funding for sanctuary jurisdictions, and what work needs to be done to lift up their perspective?
Join us for a discussion of these questions with Jonathan Blazer, Advocacy and Policy Counsel at the American Civil Liberties Union, and Sheriff Jerry Clayton of Washtenaw County in Michigan. At the beginning of the call, Kerri Talbot, Partner at The VENG Group, will also provide a general policy update. The discussion will be moderated by Aryah Somers Landsberger.
Co-sponsored by: Forefront, Funders' Committee for Civic Participation, Grantmakers of Oregon and Southwest Washington, Philanthropy New York, Northern California Grantmakers
Background: GCIR is pleased to assume responsibility for the monthly policy calls that Geri Mannion of the Carnegie Corporation of New York has organized for the past few years. Held on the third Thursday of every month, these calls provide the latest updates on timely policy issues affecting immigrants and refugees—and explore issues that areparticularly relevant or pressing for philanthropy. At critical junctures, we will also produce written policy updates and resource materials to deepen funders’ understanding of key developments and their implications for philanthropy. Please contact Aryah Somers Landsberger, director of programs, with your suggestions on topics, speakers, and resources to share.
Calls are open to GCIR members, other grantmaking institutions, philanthropic advisors, and members and staff of funder affinity groups and regional associations of grantmakers. (Participation is limited to organizations that share GCIR’s core values.)
Registration: Please register (link is external) by COB Wednesday, February 15.
Philanthropy Northwest thanks GCIR for their partnership on this program.
