Join us for this Broadband Interest Group Meeting where we'll continue our exploration of what different funders are doing to work towards broadband access in rural and Indigenous communities. In this session, we'll learn from Alvin Warren, the vice president of career pathways & advocacy at Los Alamos National Labs (LANL) Foundation in New Mexico. Building upon successful 2020 Census efforts in New Mexico, Alvin and other local grantmakers created a pooled fund focused on state and federal broadband efforts. During this conversation with him, we will learn more about how and why they leveraged their census partnerships, what their collective goal was, as well as more information about the fund and its role.

Background

The Broadband Interest Group's goal is to gain an action-oriented understanding of the role philanthropy can play in supporting broadband access, specifically in rural, Indigenous/Native communities and communities of color in our region. This group will partner with our Tribal Broadband Learning Community, federal and state government offices, community leaders and funder networks to help our communities get improved broadband access.

Alvin Warren, LANL Foundation, Vice President of Career Pathways & Advocacy

Alvin is a lifelong northern New Mexican, a member of Santa Clara Pueblo and a 30-year resident of the Española Valley. Prior to coming to the LANL Foundation, he was a program officer at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and responsible for an extensive portfolio of grants and program-related investments in New Mexico. These investments focused on improving the economic well-being of underserved youth, individuals and families through supporting successful employment pathways and workforce training approaches, policy and systems change to increase workers’ wages and benefits and expansion of entrepreneur’s access to technical assistance and affordable capital. Alvin also worked to support innovative teacher recruitment and professional development models, the establishment of full- and dual-language immersion schools and the transformation of educational systems.

Alvin has served as the cabinet secretary of Indian Affairs for the State of New Mexico, was the lieutenant governor of Santa Clara Pueblo and principal/executive vice president of Blue Stone Strategy Group. Alvin is a graduate of Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and Dartmouth College.
