July 2016 | Philanthropy Northwest

My life, the work I do and the work of Pride Foundation will be forever changed by last month’s shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida that resulted in the devastating loss of 49 lives. This act of violence has instilled fear across LGBTQ communities, especially among people of color, affirming that we are unable to live openly and genuinely in the places that we had considered safe. Through all these challenges and heartbreak, I’ve found myself reflecting on the daily acts of inspiration that fuel my work. I am inspired by the strength and compassion of my colleagues at Pride Foundation, who continue to remind me what it looks like to show up and be seen. I am inspired by the courageous and tenacious LGBTQ community in Oregon. I am inspired by my peers in Philanthropy Northwest's Momentum Fellowship, for their support and leadership, and fierce and unwavering commitment to equity. I am inspired by the resilience of our LGBTQ community — that we will respond with love and continue to build bridges across difference.

On June 23, 2016, a deadlocked Supreme Court left in place a lower court decision halting the implementation of expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA). Join Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees and Philanthropy Northwest for a one-hour national webinar to learn the details of this decision and to discuss possible philanthropic responses to address both short- and long-term community needs.

Individuals, foundations and corporate philanthropists from across the country have come forward to offer donations and messages of support to the victims, survivors and families of the Pulse nightclub attack in Orlando, Florida. The June 12 shooting claimed the lives of 49 people (not including the gunman) and left dozens more injured, predominantly LGBTQ and Latino. The OneOrlando fund now exceeds $8 million, including contributions from at least six Philanthropy Northwest corporate members: Alaska Airlines, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, KeyBank, Starbucks and Wells Fargo.

Wells Fargo & Company has announced a $300,000 donation to the OneOrlando fund, set up by the City of Orlando to address the needs of victims and the community in the wake of the Pulse nightclub shooting that killed 49 and wounded more than 50 people early Sunday morning. The OneOrlando Fund will be administered by the Central Florida Foundation, which will guide funds to nonprofits to support the victims and families of this tragedy, as well to the LGBTQ, Hispanic, faith, and other affected communities. Funds will also be directed to other needs that may arise but cannot yet be anticipated.

Our hearts are filled with sorrow as we grieve with the victims, survivors and families in Orlando, nearly all LGBTQ, Latino/a and young people. We are touched by the calls we've received from members and partners wanting to know how to help. We honor the many advocates, nonprofits and leaders who we know will help the families, and all of us, heal in the aftermath of such violence. Our colleagues at Florida Philanthropic Network have shared their recommendations for supporting victims, survivors and their families. In our own region, we are reminded of the shooting at Umpqua Community College last fall, and are grateful to Anne Kubisch of The Ford Family Foundation for sharing Roseburg's story of community resilience. Our six-state region represents America’s unique tapestry — urban and rural, young and old, indigenous and newly arrived, LGBTQ and straight. Sharing our different perspectives and experiences makes us stronger. Together, we remain committed to advancing philanthropy that supports vibrant, equitable and inclusive communities that honor our past, our people, our cultures — and creates a better future.

The June 12 nightclub attack in Orlando, Florida was the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. Our hearts are filled with sorrow, and our thoughts are with the victims, survivors and families in Orlando. We are touched by the calls we have received from members and partners wanting to know how to help. Florida Philanthropy Network, Philanthropy Northwest's peer organization based in Tampa, has shared this message in the wake of the tragedy:

April 2016 | Philanthropy Northwest

Seven months after we first met our inaugural cohort of Momentum Fellows, a group of emerging leaders working to advance diversity, equity and inclusion in philanthropy, we continue to be blown away by their insights on our blog and in the field. Leaders at their host foundations — Marguerite Casey Foundation, Northwest Health Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust, Oregon Community Foundation, Pride Foundation and Rasmuson Foundation — have also expressed great excitement with this work, which developed out of our first CEO cohort on diversity, equity and inclusion. Before their April meeting at Marguerite Casey Foundation, we asked each of the nine Momentum Fellows to share their thoughts on this prompt: What have you learned about diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in philanthropy since becoming a Momentum Fellow — and what do you hope to learn/achieve in the rest of our time together?
