Dan Brettler, Gordon McHenry, Jr. and David Wertheimer, Gates Foundation | There are many different crises that can catapult a family into homelessness: Loss of a job, domestic violence, accidents or serious illness, and inter-generational poverty – to name just a few. In addition, despite efforts to coordinate, past experiences in responding to homelessness have shown us that, although admirable, fragmented, non-integrated efforts to solve this problem by organizations and systems working independently and on their own have not stemmed the tide of this crisis. The good news is that we now know what works.

Eli Grossman and Gunner Scott, Pride Foundation | In two decades, Pride Foundation has awarded close to 1,500 scholarships, totaling nearly $4 million, to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) and allied students in the Pacific Northwest. This year, we received more than 770 applications and coordinated over 300 volunteer reviewers from our five-state region over a three-month period. We are pleased with the results, but could there be a more streamlined way to award our scholarships, while remaining fair, consistent, timely and even more accessible?
