Anthony Mallott is CEO of Sealaska, a Juneau-based Alaska Native corporation owned by 22,000 Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian shareholders. In addition to leading Sealaska, he serves on the Rasmuson Foundation board and The Alaska Community Foundation investment committee. He recently spoke with Philanthropy Northwest CEO Jeff Clarke about his work, as part of our ongoing series of interviews with key leaders in philanthropy from across the region and around the nation.

Kristen Holway, Senior Manager, Learning Practice | Knowing that nearly half of all low-income Montanans experience at least one civil legal problem each year that goes unaddressed, the Montana Access to Justice Commission, with support from Philanthropy Northwest member Montana Justice Foundation, conducted a study to better understand the gaps and barriers to civil legal aid access. Their findings have implications for funders across all states and all sectors — and have us asking ourselves whether there is a need for broader conversation.

To support their Pacific Northwest communities, Bank of America is giving $1,066,000 to 40 local nonprofits focused on providing access to workforce development and education opportunities in 2015. These grants are part of the bank’s broader philanthropic investment in helping individuals and families improve their economic stability.

Following up on its 100,000 Opportunities Initiative, Starbucks has announced two supplementary efforts "to support economic development and social change in diverse, urban communities by helping young people connect with meaningful employment and pathways to success." The first is to open stores with training centers in 15 low-income urban communities, beginning with Ferguson, Mo. and Chicago's South Side. The second is $1.5 million in Opportunity for Youth grants to 72 nonprofits in 15 U.S. cities next year, "to help young people become job-ready."
