This report is for philanthropic foundation investment committees exploring racial, gender and social equity issues. We distilled some key process and decision points that committees encounter, based on interviews with trustees, CEOs and finance staff, along with foundation financial advisors and advocacy groups. A diverse set of experts reviewed and expanded on the ideas.

The report is based on extensive interviews with foundation trustees, CIOs, investing staff, outside investing advisors and industry advocates centering equity in investment committees - and distills key processes and decision points that investment committees encounter along the way.

It’s magic to watch impact investing happen in a small town. In June, a group of local people met in Missoula, Montana for 90 minutes and crafted a $300,000 loan enabling a nonprofit organization to buy land for an innovative affordable housing development. Their transaction paves the way for Homeword to develop up to 72 new homes and support services that are sorely needed in Missoula.
